Sign the Petition: Nursing Graduate Students Left Out of New Federal Loan Caps

24 November 2025
Graduate nursing students may soon face lower federal loan caps under a new Department of Education proposal, and nursing is currently excluded from the definition of “professional degree” programs. This would limit graduate nursing loans to less than half the amount available to students in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, law, and other fields. Learn more and stay updated here.

The American Nurses Association is actively advocating to ensure nursing is included in the “professional degree” definition. ANA is:
  • Working with national coalition partners
  • Submitting formal comments to the Department of Education
  • Preparing a coordinated response for the public comment period
  • Elevating the voices and stories of nurses impacted by graduate student loan caps
How you can help:
  • Sign the petition and take action here
  • Share your story about how loan access has affected your nursing education or practice here
Your voice matters. Together, we can ensure graduate nursing education receives the recognition and support it deserves.
